Artificial Intelligence in Education

Thelen, Tobias (ed.): Artificial Intelligence in Education. Osnabrück: Publications of the Institute of Cognitive Science 2022, Number 04.

In three seminars by Tobias Thelen in winter terms 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22, student groups worked on Artifical Intelligence topics in order to create small publishable articles. Besides AI, getting to know typical academic publication processes was an important learning goal of the seminar as well.

Important: Publication was optional, and all students could decide freely after the announcement of the grades whether their contribution should actually be published and whether their name or a pseudonym should be mentioned.

The results are magnificient! The seminar participants have put a lot of effort in writing their papers and in commenting texts from other groups in a peer reviewing phase.

All in all, 125 students have contributed 44 chapters on over 700 pages.

These are the books:

  1. "Artificial Intelligence in Public Discourse" - This book contains 26 original studies about how Artificial Intelligence is depicted in public discourse: By the general public, e.g., on Twitter, by professional journalists, by experts addressing the public or in movies and literature. Download open access book: https://doi.org/10.48693/151

  2. "Artificial Intelligence in Education" - This book contains 18 systematic literature reviews of various subfields of current AI in education research. Topics range from ethics and didactics, methods and technologies, extended reality and robots to AI applications addressing learners with special needs. Download open access book: https://doi.org/10.48693/152

You can even order printed versions of the book at aibooks.org and support the association of friends and sponsors of the institute of cognitive science that made it possible to give free printed copies to all authors.

And there's even more to come!

Because of the large success, the results from the 2019/2020 seminar on AI in education will be published as well - though they will need a lot of work to be done due to organizational mistakes amde by the instructor.

And, in the winter term 2022/2023 there will be a seminar of "Learning about AI", aiming for publishable papers again.
